Seva Yoga: Self Expansion through Service

Ananda Palo Alto’s Volunteer Program

“Service is ennobling. It is a way of offering our human littleness into the great Reality that is God. When we serve others in this spirit, we find our own spirits becoming freed from egotism.”

—Swami Kriyananda

“Seva” is the sanskrit word for selfless service.

For a devotee, all actions can be a form of karma yoga when one does one’s duties with the thought of God flowing through oneself. Hence, no matter what we do, it can be a service to God: whether to our families, our work, our friends or neighbours.

Serving and giving our energy back to our spiritual source is an important part of spiritual practice for a devotee. In the Indian tradition serving the Guru through service is essential to making spiritual progress.

If you have been inspired by what you have received at Ananda and want to be part of this spiritual community, being part of the volunteer program can be a meaningful way to deepen your connection and spiritual friendship with fellow members.

There are many areas and opportunities to volunteer:

  • Sunday service support

  • Temple upkeep

  • Ananda valley farm

  • Cooking and special events

  • Tech support for classes and events
